Guatemala, November 28, 2022
Mario López Estrada, Honorary President of Grupo Onyx and Founding Member of the Mario López Estrada Foundation, met with Inter-American Dialogue President and CEO Rebecca Bill Chavez on Monday, November 28 in Guatemala City. During the meeting, the two executives discussed the agenda and priorities of the Washington-DC based think tankas well as the projects of the Foundation and the investment portfolio of Grupo Onyx.
Mrs. Rebecca Bill Chávez and Mario López Estrada also addressed the main challenges currently facing the United States and Latin America, particularly Guatemala, as well as the possible areas of cooperation that may exist between both institutions. The executives discussed jointly promoting projects that enhance development in Guatemala, including projects that seek to generate prosperity in the country and reduce irregular migration.
The two organizations have a history of collaboration. Grupo Onyx, through one of the companies to which it was formerly linked, developed with the Inter-American Dialogue a Financial Inclusion Program in the Departments of Huehuetenango, Quetzaltenango and Guatemala, whose purpose was to contribute to financially educate 28,000 recipients of family remittances in those Departments, through the use of the Electronic Wallet, contributing to a better use and savings of remittances. This project allowed people trained in it to reach a joint balance of more than US$1 million through the Electronic Wallet.
Since 2018 the Mario López Estrada Foundation has also been one of the sponsors of the Inter-American Dialogue Gala. Grupo Onyx seeks to contribute to the advancing the mission of the Inter-American Dialogue, creating opportunities to promote an inclusive and comprehensive political dialogue that seeks to bring together the different leaders from across the hemisphere to find viable solutions to the challenges we face.
Also participating in the strategic discussion were Dr. Manuel Orozco, Director of the Migration, Remittances and Development Program at the Inter-American Dialogue; Aurora López, Founding Member of the Mario López Estrada Foundation; and the Director of Corporate Relations for Grupo Onyx Carlos Raúl Morales.
