MARIO LÓPEZ ESTRADA FOUNDATION

The Mario López Estrada Foundation was founded in the year 2019 by Onyx Group, one of the largest corporate conglomerates in Guatemala. The foundation seeks to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life for Guatemalans in the most vulnerable regions of the country, in particular rural areas, for which it seeks to create development opportunities that influence in the prosperity of people and the reduction of outbound migration.

The main projects of the Mario López Estrada Foundation are based on health, education, women’s empowerment, and transparency, which are 100% financed with resources from Onyx Group. The Foundation has chosen to align and coordinate its projects with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the United States Embassy in Guatemala.

Onyx Group has donated, through the various foundations it has participated in, over $50 million dollars that are not tax deductible. These resources have had a direct impact in the development of the marginalized population in Guatemala.

Founding Members

Mario López Estrada

Mario López Estrada (March 21, 1938 – March 20, 2023) was a Guatemalan businessman, philanthropist, and the founder of Grupo Onyx, a consortium of companies involved in renewable energy generation, consumer products distribution, digital services, and commercial and industrial real estate development in Guatemala and Paraguay. He was also the founder of the Mario López Estrada Foundation.

Ana María Pérez Bosch de López

Ana María Pérez Bosch de López has dedicated her life to charity and social works, through various organizations, focusing attention on vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Mariana López de Lara

Mariana López de Lara has degrees in Economics and Business Administration, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Universidad Francisco Marroquín de Guatemala. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Onyx Group, and is a founding member of the Mario López Estrada Foundation.

Mario López Pérez

A Civil Engineer who graduated from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. Mario is a member of the Board of Directors and CEO of Onyx Group, as well as a founding member of the Mario López Estrada Foundation.

Gabriela López Pérez

Gabriela López Pérez has a degree in Marketing from Universidad Rafael Landívar de Guatemala, is a member of the Board of Directors of Onyx Group, and is a founding member of the Mario López Estrada Foundation.

Aurora López

A graduate of Duke University in Economics, she is an investor, philanthropist, and mental health advocate. He helped create the family office and now focuses on his personal investment portfolio and creative projects. He is a founding member of the Mario López Estrada Foundation.

Our History

2005

AYUVI Collaboration

Through the Tigo Foundation, support was given to the Ayúdame a Vivir Foundation (AYUVI), which helps with the maintenance of the National Pediatric Oncology Unit, helping raise life expectancy for admitted children from 20% to 70%.

2009

Schools Construction

Through the Tigo Foundation, construction of public schools was carried out in the most vulnerable areas of the country, managing to build one school every 10 days for 10 years. This resulted in the construction of a total of 365 schools during this period.

2010

Tigo Foundation

The Tigo Foundation was founded with Mario López Estrada as President. This was the forerunner of the Mario López Estrada Foundation.

2017

Energy in your Studies by Horus Energy

This social education program was created in 2017, and delivers school supplies to children who attend public schools in the area of influence of the Horus Energy photovoltaic plant. This is one of the main programs that has generated a large impact in the communities of Chiquimulilla, Santa Rosa.

2019

Mario Lopez Estrada Foundation

The Mario Lopez Estrada Foundation was founded, which prioritizes projects in education, health, women’s empowerment, and transparency.

2020

USAID Alliance

The Directors of the Mario Lopez Estrada Foundation made the decision to prioritize and work on cooperation projects, in alliance with the government of the United States of America, particularly through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Grupo Onyx

Grupo Onyx is a consortium of Guatemalan companies with origins in the year 1967, founded by Mario López Estrada and currently run by the second generation of his family. The group has in its portfolio important investments in real estate, renewable energy generation, specialized cellular maintenance services, a mass consumption distribution network, and digital services, among others.
