Since the beginning of the construction of the “Horus Energy” Solar Plant, located in the municipality of Chiquimulilla, department of Santa Rosa, in 2014, Grupo Onyx decided to collaborate with public education in that municipality, supporting the construction and reconstruction of public schools, as well as donating school supplies to their students, having donated to date a total of $544 thousand dollars, equivalent to about Q4 million 352 thousand quetzales.
Cooperation is provided through the “Energy in your Studies” Program, which was created by Grupo Onyx and Horus Energy for that purpose. A total of 33 public schools in Chiquimulilla have benefited from the program.
In terms of school supplies, 9,280 bags have been donated, which contain a waterproof bag, different types of notebooks, pens, pencils, sharpeners, scissors, rubber bands, modelling clay, crayons, erasers, and zippered cases, with an investment of US$84,000,equivalent to about 672,000 Quetzales.
In terms of school construction and reconstruction, classrooms, kitchens, separate bathrooms for girls and boys, sports fields, water wells, classrooms for school management, lighting projects, roof changes, and renovation of structures have been built. , general painting of schools and submersible pumps have been donated for water wells, as well as educational furniture such as desks, work tables, and blackboards, among others, with an investment of $460 thousand dollars equivalent to about Q3 million 680 thousand quetzales.
Gabriela López expressed at the Astillero Sur School that Grupo Onyx and the Mario López Estrada Foundation are filled with satisfaction to be able to support public education in the country, but in particular, boys and girls with scarce economic resources, so that they do not see their education interrupted and frustrated. He assured that only with education can one aspire to have a better future, a better country.
On her part, Mariana López de Lara expressed at the Astillero Norte School that Grupo Onyx has supported public education in the country for many years and recalled that in the past, from another foundation of the business group, 365 schools were built during 10 years, which represented building a school every 10 days. Mrs. López de Lara assured that it fills her with joy to be able to contribute to the education of the children of Chiquimulilla and thereby influence the generation of more economic opportunities to reduce irregular migration.
The students and parents of both educational establishments thanked Grupo Onyx, the Mario López Estrada Foundation and Horus Energy, for the important support they receive every year with the donation of school supplies. They expressed that they are families and children with limited economic resources and that thanks to the support of the Mario López Estrada Foundation they have been able to continue their studies.
The Directors of the public schools recognized that thanks to these donations, the attendance of children to schools has increased and, at the same time, school dropout has decreased, since the delivery of new and good quality school supplies not only motivates children to attend school, but also allows parents to send them without incurring the expenses that their purchase represents.
