Alliance for Education in Guatemala City
The City of Guatemala is also an important area which receives migrants returned from the United States, as well as being the most populated urban area in the country. It has the challenge of keeping young people from participating in outbound migration.
This is why the Mario López Estrada Foundation in alliance with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Bridges of World Vision project, and the Municipality of the City of Guatemala, signed an agreement of cooperation on February 1st, 2022, which gave life to the “Alliance for Education in Guatemala City” which is implemented in MUNITEC in zone 21 and in zone 3, as well as in various auxiliary mayor’s offices of the city. The project seeks to improve the quality of life of young people between 15 and 29 years of age, through alternative education, employment, and/or entrepreneurship, thereby addressing the main issues that cause outbound migration in the country.
The project focuses on: a two-year training track resulting in a diploma called “Entrepreneurship with Success”; STEAM education which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics; technical development, and development in employment and entrepreneurship through the “Acciona tu Empleo” and; “Acciona tu Emprendimiento”, imparted to 1,925 young people per year as of now.
The Municipality of Guatemala provides the facilities for MUNITEC as well as promotes the classes; the Mario López Estrada Foundation provides the internet access; and the World Vision Foundation teaches the courses with the financial support of USAID.
